Periodontitis, often called "gum disease", is a widespread inflammation of the tissue around your teeth. It gradually destroys the support of your teeth, resulting in wobbly teeth. The damage develops gradually: First, bacteria adhere to your teeth and cause gum irritation. As the situation worsens, these germs penetrate deeper, causing the gums to recede and the bones to weaken. Eventually, teeth can fall out. But there is hope! At Praxis Smile4Life we offer gentle treatments for periodontitis, from prevention to the use of lasers and periodontal surgery.

How does periodontitis manifest itself?

One of the biggest challenges with periodontitis is its asymptomatic course, which means that it often remains undetected for a long period of time. In the early stages, symptoms of "periodontitis" can include slightly reddened gums that bleed easily or become sensitive when brushing teeth. This can lead to the formation of inflamed gum pockets and eventually to the gums receding from the teeth. Periodontitis often remains undetected until a tooth has already loosened.

How can periodontitis be prevented?

Alongside tooth decay, periodontitis is the most common cause of premature tooth loss. This underlines the importance of consistent and regular preventive dental care. Early detection and treatment of gum inflammation is crucial in order to control or even cure the disease. Our team of dental hygienists offer a convenient recall service to ensure your dental health is supported.

How is periodontitis treated?

The treatment of periodontitis is extremely important for general health, as the inflammatory disease is also associated with internal diseases such as heart attacks or diabetes. Periodontitis can also worsen blood sugar levels. Existing diabetes, in turn, can also promote periodontitis. The treatment of gum inflammation is carried out in several steps and aims to reduce inflammation in the gum pockets:

Ultrasound: The first step is for the dental hygienist to clean the teeth. The high vibrations of the ultrasound effortlessly remove tartar and plaque, even in hard-to-reach areas such as between the teeth or even under the gum line. In this way, the teeth are cleaned more efficiently and gently than would be possible with conventional hand instruments (curettage).

Photodynamic laser therapy: A gentle and modern option is laser therapy, with which we achieve very good results in our Smile4Life dental practice. The assistant first applies a dye to the gum pockets, which colors bacterial plaque and tartar - the actual triggers of periodontitis. Laser irradiation activates the dye without damaging the gums. The gum pockets can then be treated a second time with ultrasound. Laser therapy has the additional advantage that significantly fewer germs and bacteria can enter the bloodstream during subsequent laser surgery.

Laser surgery: Another option for laser therapy is periodontal surgery. The highly focused beam of light is used to gently remove inflamed gum tissue. The high heat effect of the laser closes the wound immediately and prevents bleeding.

How does laser periodontitis treatment work?

Everything begins with a comprehensive examination, during which we also measure the depth of the gum pockets. We then remove all soft and hard deposits above the gum line and smooth the roots of the teeth. Approximately two weeks later, treatment is carried out with the soft laser. To do this, we introduce a special blue dye into the gum pockets, which stains the remaining bacteria. The dye absorbs the laser beams and is thereby energetically charged (activated). This special procedure is called photodynamic laser therapy.

Why is periodontal treatment with a laser useful?

Laser therapy can complement periodontal treatment very effectively:

- Maximum tissue protection and pain-free
- No anesthesia (injection) necessary (no needle)
- Safe removal of bacteria even from the "smallest corners"
- Rapid healing of gum inflammation
- Usually only one to three treatment sessions required

Benefit from our expertise

The treatment of gum disease with laser has decisive advantages for the patient:

The laser light effectively kills the bacteria causing bacterial problems in the gum pockets, which cannot be achieved by scaling alone. As the long-term success of gum treatment depends largely on reducing bacteria in the gum pockets as much as possible, laser therapy leads to a significantly better and more sustainable treatment result than purely mechanical cleaning.
The antibacterial effect of the laser enables a much gentler procedure than with the conventional method alone. Deep gum pockets previously had to be cleaned during gum surgery. However, cutting and opening the gums often led to aesthetically unsatisfactory results, as the gums shrank during the healing phase. Other problems included delayed wound healing and increased postoperative pain. Laser treatment can often avoid surgery, as the laser light also reaches very deep pockets and has a germ-killing effect. Patients find laser gum treatment much more pleasant than surgery.
