An apicoectomy is a procedure to save damaged teeth that have not responded well enough to previous root canal treatments. If you have had root canal treatment and possibly additional treatment, but still have inflammation in the affected tooth, you may be concerned about what to do next. Rest assured that our experienced practice team at Praxis Smile4Life has a proven approach to clinical dental treatment that is designed to preserve your smile in this situation.

In certain situations, an apicoectomy (a minor dental surgical procedure) may be recommended as the next necessary step for your optimal tooth preservation and treatment.

In an apicectomy, the tip of the tooth root (anatomical tip) is surgically removed. This procedure is usually necessary if cysts or infections persist even after root canal treatment or follow-up treatment and conventional disinfection methods and root canal fillings have failed to resolve the problem.

During an apicectomy, a small part of the gum is lifted under local anesthesia to reach the root tip. The infected tissue and bone are carefully removed and the size of the root tip is reduced. If possible, our dentist or endodontist can seal the end of the root tip with a biological cement filling.

The gum is then closed and sutured again.

Who is an apicectomy suitable for?

After your initial consultation, our experienced dental team will assess whether you are suitable for an apicoectomy. We are committed to providing you with the best possible quality of treatment to protect your oral health and well-being in the long term.

An apicoectomy is considered when both the initial root canal treatment and subsequent follow-up treatment have been unsuccessful. Patients who have not experienced relief from root canal treatment may benefit from an apicoectomy to relieve the pain caused by root inflammation and avoid extraction. In some cases, persistent discomfort and infection in the root may be due to factors such as new decay or trauma to the canal area. However, inadequate cleaning and disinfection of the root tip is the most common reason for persistent infection.

It is important to treat both the root canal and a persistent infection to prevent the spread of infection to other parts of the mouth or body, which could lead to further complications. If you continue to experience pain and see signs of inflammation or infection around the root canal, we will thoroughly examine the area to determine if an apicoectomy is a better option for you than an extraction.

What is the success rate of an apicoectomy?

Dental research shows that the success rates for apicoectomies are between 25% and 85%. Normally, an average success rate of around 50% is assumed. After reviewing our results at Praxis Smile4Life , we are pleased to inform you that the current success rate is around 70%. Front teeth are more likely to have a successful endodontic treatment than back teeth. It is important that the infected root canal tip is also filled during the surgical procedure if possible.
