Bone grafting, also known as bone augmentation, is required if the volume of the jawbone is not sufficient to support an implant. This procedure can be performed in both the upper and lower jaw and provides a stable foundation for dental implants. We often combine the patient's bone with synthetic bone material to restore the natural shape of the jawbone and place the implant securely so that it can be successfully inserted permanently.

What is a bone graft?

Bone grafting, also known as bone augmentation, involves the transfer of bone tissue from another part of the body (autogenous bone), a natural substitute (allogenic bone) or synthetic material (artificial or xenogenic bone) to an area in the mouth where it is needed following a loss of bone volume. In addition, it is possible to combine the patient's own bone with a natural or synthetic bone source to restore the original shape of the jawbone and thus facilitate the placement of a dental implant.

This procedure may be necessary if an implant is required but the existing jawbone is not strong enough to provide sufficient support. Bone grafts can be performed in both the upper and lower jaw and are often performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia or light sedation in our practice on Kärntnerstraße in the center of Vienna.

Normally, the variety of bone grafting techniques available at the Smile4Life Implant Center Vienna, ranging from simple to more complicated procedures, is sufficient to cover almost all cases related to implants and bone augmentation.

What is a bone graft?

Bone grafting or bone augmentation involves transplanting bone from a part of your body (your own bone), using a natural substitute (another person's bone) or using something made in a laboratory (synthetic or animal bone). This is done in specific areas of your mouth where the bone has thinned or disappeared. Sometimes doctors will mix your bone with new or artificial bone to restore the original shape of your jaw. This helps a dental implant to fit perfectly.

If you need an implant and your jawbone is not strong enough, we sometimes need to add some bone. This can be done for both the upper and lower jaw. In most cases, this requires a short visit to our practice on Kärntnerstrasse in the heart of Vienna. All you need is a local anesthetic.

If you need a lot of new bone tissue, we sometimes have to remove it from your hip. However, at our clinic we can fix almost all tooth and bone problems without this major step. Our methods are varied and can treat almost anything.

Who is a bone transplant suitable for?

Suitable candidates are patients who have been recommended dental implant surgery and are in good general health and maintain excellent oral hygiene, but require additional support from their jawbone. If there is less bone in the area where the dental implant is to be placed, a bone graft is required. This is a necessary step due to the natural decrease in bone density in the jaw area that occurs after tooth loss, especially when an implant is being considered.

Is a bone graft necessary for dental implants?

Whether bone grafting is required before inserting a dental implant depends mainly on the quality and quantity of the jawbone in the area where the implant is to be inserted. It is not always necessary. If there is less bone on both sides of the planned dental implant, bone grafting is advisable.
